Berlin is the capital and largest city of Germany by both area and population. It’s 3,769,495 (2019) inhabitants make it the most populous city proper of the European Union. The city is one of Germany’s 16 federal states. It is surrounded by the state of Brandenburg, and contiguous with Potsdam, Brandenburg’s capital. Berlin has a continental climate with cold winters, hot summers, and mild autumn and spring seasons.

Winters (December to February) can be cold and damp, with the temperature hovering around freezing.
